What's the Real Cost to Paint a Door? An Australian Pro Shares Insights!

How much to paint your doors and trim? I get that question all the time. The answer depends, but let this seasoned Sydney painter give you the inside scoop.

The cost can range quite a bit based on the specifics, but you’re generally looking at $200-600 to paint a standard interior door including the trim and frame. Exterior doors tend to hit the higher end of that spectrum due to preparation and sealing required.

Now if you’ve got intricate carved doors or are looking at giving the house a full facelift with 20 doors, costs add up quick.

Interior Door Painting Costs

Interior doors have quite a wide painting cost range.

  1. The standard 6-panel doors usually come in around $250-350 including the door trim and frame. It’s simple work.
  2. If you want to get decorative with carved wood, glass panels or changing up the trim profile, materials and labour bump up costs. For a uniquely ornate interior door, you’re looking at $400-500 typically. Though I did have a client import an antique Italian door for their villa reno – $5k in door and paintwork alone! But it became the showpiece of the foyer, let me tell you.
  3. Now don’t forget – painting the door without touching up the trims and frame often looks disjointed. I’d recommend budgeting an extra $50-100 per door to paint those elements for a cohesive finish. Little details like this can really add up when taking on the larger cost to paint walls project but make a big difference for curbing appeal when you walk through the house! And if the hinges are looking worn while we’re at it, a fresh coat there makes the door feel brand new.

Exterior Door Painting Costs

Now exterior doors require a bit more elbow grease. Starting with the front door and frame—you’re looking around $300-600 depending on materials and styling. I always tell clients not to skimp here since it creates that all-important first impression. Splurge on quality paints and finishes that withstand the elements too. $500 now can save you from replacing the whole door sooner.

The cost of painting a garage door in Australia can vary based on factors such as the size and material of the door, the condition of the surface, the type of paint used, and the labor involved. On average, you can expect to pay between $300 to $800 for professional painting services for a standard single-car garage door. Larger or more complex garage doors may cost more to paint.

How much does it cost to paint one side of a door?

Generally, you can expect to pay between $30 to $100 for painting one side of a standard interior door.

However, this is just a rough estimate, and the actual cost may vary based on the specific requirements of the project and the rates charged by painting contractors in your area. Additionally, if the door requires any repairs or preparation work before painting, this may affect the overall cost. It’s always a good idea to obtain quotes from multiple painters to get a more accurate estimate for your specific needs.

Is it cheaper to paint a door or buy a new one?

When deciding whether to paint a door or buy a new one, there are several factors to consider, including the condition of the existing door, the cost of a new door, and the desired outcome. Here are some points to help you make an informed decision:

Painting an Old Door:

  • If you already have doors that are the correct size and general style for your home, painting them can be a cost-effective option.
  • Painting an old door can give it a refreshed look without the expense of buying a new one.
  • It is important to consider painting the surrounding door frame as well to ensure a cohesive look.
  • If the old door has extensive damage or is in poor condition, replacing it may be a better choice.

Buying a New Door:

  • If you decide to buy a new door, painting it is still a good idea if you want a specific color that is not readily available.
  • Buying a white door and having it painted afterwards can be less expensive than buying a color-matched door from the store.
  • Consider changing the door frame along with the new door to ensure a cohesive look.
  • Alternatively, you can choose a wood door and have it stained or varnished to match your desired color scheme .

Overall, painting a door is a cost-effective option if the existing door is in good condition and the desired color is achievable through painting. However, if the door is extensively damaged or if you want a specific color that is not easily achieved through painting, buying a new door may be a better choice.
